Surface piercings should be pierced with a staple shaped bar, which sits under the surface of the skin. Two attachments on the ends of the bar will be visible, commonly a disk of bezel set gem. Dermal piercings have a small 'foot' anchor that sits under the surface of the skin with a singular disk/bezel attachment visible. We use needles for our surface piercings and a dermal/biopsy punch for our dermal piercings. The average minimum healing time for these is 6-12 months. Minimalistic jewellery is best for the initial piercing, as it minimises the risk of catching the jewellery. More intricate or decorative attachments can be worn once the piercings are fully healed, but it is still essential to avoid knocks or snags to the jewellery, as this can easily cause migration or rejection. Surface and dermal piercings are often referred to as 'long-term temporary' piercings. It is not uncommon for these piercings to eventually migrate.:
